Dear Animals for the Care of Treatment, I'm in Mississippi right now for a suspected hoarding case, and I'm seeing dogs who are suffering -- forced to live outside with no water and, in some cases, dying from their conditions. With your emergency gift today, we can continue to respond and to save animals from cruelty. We're finding dogs with fresh, open wounds and limbs that have clearly been broken for a long time. Many of them are terribly dehydrated and completely infested with fleas. ... Read Full Post »

Wildlife and Wildlands in Danger Dear Animals for the Care of Treatment, The U.S. Senate will soon be voting on the dangerous "Sportsmen's Act??, a radical handout to extreme trophy hunting groups. In a single swoop, this legislation would open millions of acres of public lands -- including sensitive Wilderness Areas -- to hunting and fur trapping, at the expense of other land users and endangered and threatened species. It would prevent the Environmental Protection Agency from even cons... Read Full Post »

Dear Animals for the Care of Treatment, A small group of vocal trophy hunters want to open a season on Florida's black bears. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will be hosting public workshops throughout the state to get local citizen input on how this vulnerable species should be managed. Florida's black bears are still recovering after being hunted nearly to extinction. So if you're concerned about the fate of Florida's black bears like we are, please come to one of the... Dear Animals for the Care of Treatment, When a concerned patron saw a bloody, wounded bear lying in a cage at The Garold Wayne Interactive Zoological Park (aka "G.W. Zoo") in Oklahoma in April, she did the right thing: She called PETA for help. The bear had reportedly been mauled by another bear and sustained multiple gashes along his backâ??two weeks earlier. That's right: For two entire weeks, the roadside zoo's owner apparently allowed the injured bear to languish and bleed witho... Read Full Post »

Urgent: Millions of Kittens Need You

While most Americans are busting out the sunscreen, beach balls and barbeques in anticipation of summer, the ASPCA is preparing for a different kind of season: kitten season. Sounds adorable, right? Unfortunately, there's nothing cute about kitten season. It's the time of year when cats begin to breed, flooding animal shelters across the country with homeless and newborn kittens. It is a tremendous population explosion, and, virtually overnight, the number of kittens begins to exceed the numb... Read Full Post »

Dear Animals for the Care of Treatment, In six months, I've been involved with six puppy mill rescues. This time our Animal Rescue Team was deployed to a property in Tennessee after receiving a call for help from local authorities. Here are just a few of the 101 rescued faces from Sunday's operation. When I first saw the dogs, what struck me most was the horrible condition of their skin. Nearly each dog is suffering from mange. If you can imagine having an intense, raw, inflamed, and unst...
